Writers’ Inlet Summer Retreat

Writers’ Inlet Summer Retreat

Our theme: Maintaining momentum when you’re wading through a low, riding a high, and anywhere in between.

When: Friday July 12 & Saturday July 13.

Where: At the Inlet on Zoom

Fee: Early Bird fee of $89 before April 15th May 1st, $99 thereafter.

Turn one Friday in July into a day-long writing fest. Then on Saturday, relax on the virtual shores of the Inlet and discuss the challenges of maintaining momentum when the ebb and flow of your writing practice takes you to extremes and in between. Are the crests easier to ford, the troughs? We’ll discuss next step momentum in revision and writing practice, and consider how routine, mindset and rest help us manage.

Come for inspiration, revitalization, and get-it-done camaraderie. Take away strategies for moving forward with next steps in revision to “re-see” what you’ve done before and come up with something more.

Writers of all genres welcome.

FRIDAY JULY 12: DOUBLE WRITING CHALLENGE DAY

Double Writing Challenges, 10am-12pm; 1:30-3pm. Bring your work-in-progress and settle in to write in shared solitude through the morning and into the afternoon. Let the support of writing alongside others, sharing your intentions, and checking in about the direction of your writing help you build and maintain momentum throughout the day. Whether you finish what you start, try something new, or find a way through you didn’t know was there, you’re putting in the time along with others doing the same, and cheering each other on along the way. Includes a breakout session or two to mix and mingle with your fellow retreatants.

SATURDAY JULY 13: NEXT STEP MOMENTUM TIPS

Next Step Momentum in Revision. Discussion & Interview. 10-11am, Crafting & Mindset Discussion; 11:15–12:30pm, Inlet Interview . When we return to revise we often realize we didn’t quite say enough. A scene may drop a beat, line break too soon, plot skip a point—or that point may need some sharpening. What mindset strategies have you used to take that next step? To “re-see” what you’ve done, and come up with something more, something else? We’ll discuss common patterns in writing that can help us creatively fill in blanks, like borrowing call & response from poets, action/reaction from actors, hook/cliffhanger from suspense writers, and more.

Large Salon Tea: Reading and Writing Practice Momentum. 2-4pm, group discussion,  generative writing spurts, breakout sessions (+ 15 min spillover). We’ll look at strategies successful writers use to keep moving forward in fair weather or foul, from writing in the basement to revising in the bathtub, taking non-writing breaks to designing the perfect self-retreat. And our afternoon will feature one of the most important strategies of all: reading. Not just reading like a writer–for craft and approaches to “steal,” but reading for the pure joy of it. Discovery ways to stay “well read” and maintain a firm foundational base of for a fluid writing practice. You’re invited to bring questions. And tea! Includes a takeaway tip sheet.
