Metaphorestry

coming soon, a tender new shoot.

This spring, I’m offering the wildest thing I’ve ever grown, “metaphorestry.”

Metaphorestry (n) – The practice of connecting deeply with nature through metaphor.

Through the practice of metaphorestry you nurture meaningful relationships between the natural world, your true nature, and the nature of the world all around you.

Connecting with Nature Through Metaphor: How to Practice Metaphorestry

April 15, 22, 29 from 6-7:30pm on Zoom

You’ve been using metaphor to connect with nature in empowering ways all your life, but may not know it.

Our daily experiences are infused with language cues from the natural world: grief comes in waves, ideas compress into a nutshell, solidity holds the form of rocks, independence shapes into the winged forms of eagles.

Metaphors are as natural to our use of language as they are to the way we think, and by extension, act. So why not use metaphor proactively to rekindle your ancient connection to the deep abiding wisdom readily offered by the natural world?

Put your hand on the bark of a tree and feel your own thick skin. Watch clouds part and delight in seeing a new idea come to light. Let go of a leaf and ready yourself for change. Tap into nature’s deepest messages mirroring your deepest needs, and you may even unearth knowledge you didn’t know you had.

You’ll awaken to the realization that you are more than just a part of nature–you are nature. I call the practice “metaphorestry.”

How we’ll meet together.

We’ll meet on Zoom one evening a week for three weeks. Session one is a “field guide” to practicing metaphorestry, and prepares you for a solo encounter with nature. The following sessions invite reflection and contemplation–we’ll explore what our metaphors mean and how we can bring them deeper into our lives.

Through discussion, tips, prompts and exercises we’ll explore four modes of metaphorestry—active (being with nature outdoors or indoors), contemplative (meditating, journaling, completing a ritual), creative (making anything from poems to paintings to pies), and interactive (creating/sharing metaphors for mutual inspiration).

You’ll receive a PDF download of your own Metaphorestry Field Guide for each session, and your own solo adventures.

Join us to awaken your natural capacity for metaphor. Play with language and nature, enrich your creative practice, and cultivate awe on the sidewalk, in the woods, or your own backyard. You’ll gain insight in natural solitude and build creative communication in community. The workshop is open to everyone ages 18 & up.

Be more present in nature—and your life.
